The Automated wage payment systems called Wages Protection System (WPS) has operated for many years now across the GCC and served as an effective means of codifying, regulating and assuring the timely payment of employee salaries. Back in 2009, the UAE was the first of the GCC countries to officially endorse the WPS regime. The GCC set will now be completed with Bahrain announcing the implementation of a phased wages protection system in Bahrain in September 2019.
Of the six GCC countries, implementation of the Wages Protection in Bahrain was subject to various delays but the Central Bank of Bahrain is making a gradual pace to implement Wage payment system after the announcement in September 2019. WPS is still at the administrative stage of the course. Nevertheless, we understand that the Wages Protection Bahrain will function on a phased basis, targeting corporates, medium and small sized companies. It is not, still, clear at this phase what the controls and measures vital for Wage payment system will be or the completion dates for the phased approach of execution.
